Transportation Management Center

Brevard County Government

The Brevard transportation management center is uniquely positioned at the eastern edge of the Pineda Causeway, between the city’s commercial core and most prominent nature resource, the Indian River. The cross-section of the site allows views across the region, including to the Atlantic Ocean. As a municipal beacon for the traffic control and operations, the project site creates visibility as a public agent to the larger community. Public resources, such as the community room on the ground floor, are easily accessible and offer flexible workspace options for neighboring organizations. A wellness tower provides connectivity to upper levels and reinforces the ‘beacon’ metaphor with generous respite locations at each landing with expansive views.

“To design one building that would accommodate a variety of departments, it was important to listen and collaborate with users. This connective workplace is functional and will support future growth of one of the fastest growing counties along Florida’s Space Coast.”
Gay Geiger, AIA, Principal
A board room, located off the first-floor lobby, is host to department meetings and trainings and can be used for public events. Large windows allow daylight into the space and a view to the outdoor terrace, which is utilized as a prefunction event space and meeting breakout space.
A control room on the second floor has visual access to a media and conference room and is surrounded by offices and collaboration space off the central circulation spine. The control room simulates a universal signal and is used to monitor county-wide traffic cameras within a centralized space.
The team creatively sought to integrate amenities into the design which focused on employee wellness. The building’s egress stair extends a level to double as a fitness area and overlook with a view towards the Indian River and the Atlantic ocean beyond.
