OIA Intermodal Terminal Facility

Greater Orlando Aviation Authority

Emphasizing a visionary approach to aviation campus planning, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority recognized the importance of accommodating multi-modal transportation at the Orlando International Airport. The new Intermodal Terminal Facility provides a modern, efficient transportation hub that harmoniously connects air, rail and vehicular travel. The facility’s design and master planning prioritizes seamless connectivity, effortlessly integrating complex transportation systems. Passengers can transition between modes of transportation in tranquil terminals that are bathed in natural light and feature an interior landscape reminiscent of the beauty found in Central Florida.

As the General Consultant for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, Schenkel Shultz played a significant role in the programming of the 1.3 million square-foot terminal, which encompasses a range of essential functions. Working in concert with Architect-of-Record, HKS, the team created a facility that provides travelers with a convenient lobby transfer, comfortable waiting/hold rooms, efficient ticketing, diverse concessions, and a variety of ground transportation options. The design also accounts for future baggage services, ensuring the terminal remains adaptable and ready to meet evolving passenger needs. A spacious parking garage capable of accommodating up to 5,000 vehicles is incorporated to facilitate the parking requirements of terminal users.
The Intermodal Terminal transit node with seamlessly connects high speed, commuter, light rail and an automated people mover stitched between the Airport’s North Terminal and new South Terminal Complex.
The facility is the first LEED® v4 Certified New Construction Intermodal Terminal in the world, as well as the first LEED® v4 New Construction certification in Florida.
Skylights, regional landscape and water features reinforce The Orlando Experience®, a trademark of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, and illuminate the connection hub as a tranquil space to pass through.
The terminal's design and functionality integrate modern technologies and innovative solutions to optimize travel and meet diverse passenger needs, reflecting the commitment to remain at the forefront of transportation advancements.
